Understanding the "Ask VA to Decide" Feature

What This Button Actually Does

BLUF: This button signals to VA that you have no additional evidence coming. In practice, it rarely changes anything. Think of it as raising your hand to say "I'm done"—except the VA was probably going to proceed anyway.

The "Ask VA to Decide My Claim" feature on VA.gov generates a document indicating you consider your evidence submission complete. Despite its prominent placement, this function provides meaningful impact in only a handful of specific situations.

Limited Practical Applications

Most veterans will never need this feature. Its utility is confined to these circumstances:

Supplemental claim 5103 notice gaps — When filing a supplemental claim and the proper notice selection was missed, this button can eliminate wait time for that notice to issue.

Claims filed through representatives — POA-submitted claims and appeals may benefit from explicit evidence completion statements.

TDIU filed without 526EZ — Unemployability claims submitted through alternative methods sometimes require this confirmation.

A&A or SMC standalone filings — Aid and Attendance or Special Monthly Compensation claims not bundled with standard disability forms may need explicit closure.

What Happens After Clicking

A timestamped entry appears in your claim file documenting your statement that evidence gathering is complete. That's essentially it.

Evidence submission remains open — Despite clicking, you retain the ability to submit additional documentation at any time before the decision.

VA retains full authority — The agency can still request records, order examinations, and develop your claim regardless of your button press.

Locating This Feature

Navigate through VA.gov: Your account > Check claims status > Select your specific claim > Files section > Look for evidence submission options.

Common Misconceptions

"Clicking it speeds up my claim" — For standard claims with proper 5103 notices already issued, this action provides no acceleration benefit.

"I can't submit more evidence after clicking" — Incorrect. The statement is non-binding and does not close your evidence window.

"Every veteran should use this" — The vast majority of claims proceed identically whether you click or not.

When to Actually Use It

Consider this option only when: - You genuinely have no more evidence to submit - Your claim fits one of the specific scenarios above - Weeks have passed waiting for a 5103 notice that should have already arrived

For most veterans filing standard disability claims through VA.gov, this button remains a curiosity rather than a useful tool.
