The Work Study program offers part-time employment to veterans and dependents actively using VA education benefits. You work, you get paid, and it doesn't touch your monthly education stipend.

Qualifying for the Program

Three conditions must all be met:

Enrollment level: At least three-quarter time status at an approved educational institution.

Benefit duration: Sufficient remaining education entitlement to cover the entire work contract period.

Education program type: Active enrollment under an eligible VA education benefit.

How Much You'll Earn

Your hourly rate equals whichever is higher: federal minimum wage or your state's minimum wage. Some educational institutions pay above these minimums for similar positions—if so, you may receive the higher institutional rate.

Hours Allowed

Calculate your maximum hours using this formula:

25 hours × number of weeks in your enrollment period = total allowed hours

A standard 15-week semester permits up to 375 total hours. A 10-week quarter caps at 250 hours.

You may work these hours during the academic term and continue through breaks if you have remaining hours on your contract.

Application Process

Submit VA Form 22-8691 (Application for Work-Study Allowance) to your assigned Regional Processing Office.

Getting Paid

Advance payment option: You may receive up to 40% of your contract total (or 50 hours, whichever is less) before starting work.

Ongoing payments: After the advance, you receive payment upon completing each 50-hour block or biweekly—whichever occurs first.

Tax Treatment

Work Study earnings are not taxable income. The IRS does not require you to report these payments on federal returns. This applies regardless of which education program you're using—Post-9/11, MGIB, VR&E, or any other qualifying benefit.
